This theory, also called the Motivation-Hygiene Theory or the dual-factor theory, was penned by Frederick Herzberg in 1959. This American psychologist, who was very interested in people's motivation and job satisfaction, came up with the theory. Herzberg’s two factor theory is also called the motivation-hygiene theory of motivation. The theory is based on the information collected by Herzberg and his associates by conducting interviews of 200 engineers and accountants in the Pittsburg area of United States. Herzberg's theory states that, while negative hygiene factors (such as low pay, poor working conditions or lack of job security) cause job dissatisfaction, positive hygiene factors (such as status, good ergonomics and worker-friendly policies) simply satisfy basic employee needs, causing "movement," in the sense of work flow, but exerting no effect whatsoever on motivation.
